When to go
Best time
Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
Roberts Cottages along The Strand N can be photographed during any month.
I took this photo in the late afternoon on a clear, sunny day. Visit then, or in the morning or midday, for similar conditions.
Field tips
Angle yourself to create some depth. Since the houses are in a row, shooting from an angle will allow you to capture the houses in a more dimensional way.
The pedestrian path can get busy. Either wait until there aren't any people walking past or use them to your advantage and incorporate them to add a human element to your photo.
To really make the pastel colors pop, you can also bring along a film camera. Go at sunset to get the golden light on the houses and beach and start snapping away for a picture-perfect spot.
Try experimenting with closeups on the sides of the houses and then try standing back to get them all in a row. Moving your position or changing lenses will help achieve this effect, but you can also walk around the properties to get varying perspectives.

Oceanside is a quaint beachside city near San Diego. It's known for its surfing, harbors and marina. Make sure to check out the famous pier — both on and under — to look for interesting shots. You can also rent surf and/or boogie boards if you want to venture out into the water.
Beach Break Cafe, as well as Local Tap House and Kitchen, are two nearby places where you can get food.
