Sheung Wan Footbridge view of The Arch

avatar
@derryainsworth
From across the blue waters of Victoria Harbour, capture the unique, Tetris-style density of one of the tallest residential buildings in Hong Kong. The zoomed-in viewpoint emphasizes the structure, color and arch of this 65-floor building that towers over the West Kowloon skyline.

This image of The Arch residential building was taken across Victoria Harbour on the footbridge next to Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan, along Chung Kong Road. I stood facing north, looking toward West Kowloon to capture this perspective. You can either walk directly along the footbridge from the IFC Mall in Central or from the Sheung Wan MTR Exit D through the Ferry Terminal building to get this viewpoint. Once you arrive on the footbridge, you'll be able to see The Arch building directly across Victoria Harbour next to the ICC tower. By MRT: - Closest station: Sheung Wan Station (via Island Line) - Take Exit D - Head east toward Chung Kong Rd - Follow the path to the footbridge near Rumsey St

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
You can photograph The Arch residential building from Sheung Wan year round.
To get the best shot of The Arch, you'll need the sun to be facing the front of the building. I suggest photographing anytime between morning and the late afternoon for optimal sunlight. If you go too late in the day, the front of the building will have strong shadows that are cast over the structure. These shadows could ruin the patterned-look of the entire building and distort the vibrant colors.

Field tips

To capture the detailing of the architecture, I recommend using a zoom lens (I used a 2x lens convert to shoot at 400mm). You'll also need a high resolution camera that allows you to crop the images without losing too much detail.
When you're shooting across Victoria Harbour, there can be glare or haze. Having a polarized filter will help to bring out the color, as well as avoiding any blur in your shot.
Make sure to align yourself so that the buildings behind The Arch fill the gap between the two towers. The buildings in the background, accompanied by a tight crop, will enhance the density of the architecture.

Do nearby

Grab a drink at the nearby Beer Bay along Discovery Bay Ferry Pier. The drinks are reasonably priced and you'll also get to experience incredible views of Victoria Harbour.
This area is bustling with a lot of exciting activity. Some of my personal favorites are the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, the Western Market and the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park.
