The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is located off of Woodward Ave and has a lighted, secured parking lot located east of the DIA. Located on John R. St., south of Kirby St. and north of Warren Ave. Daily parking rate is $7; cash and credit cards are accepted. Once parked, enter the DIA through its main entrance on Woodward Ave and a few steps into the building will put you in the Walter B. Ford Great Hall. I took the featured shot from the back of the hall looking toward the front entrance.

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Mid-day
The Great Hall is an interior space unaffected by the seasons, so it's great to visit year-round.
Mid-day is the best time to ensure the Great Hall is flooded with nice, even light throughout.

Field tips

The following are not allowed beyond the Walter B. Ford Great Hall where I captured this image: flash photography, detachable lenses, camera bags, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, additional lights or extension cords.
The DIA enforces its strict policies on photography equipment and may even give you a difficult time bringing a camera into the Main Hall, so please be as discreet as possible and respect the museum staff's wishes. It might behoove you to ask for permission before even attempting the shot.
I kneeled down and used an ultra wide-angle lens (14-24mm at 16mm) to capture the detail of the mosaic marble floors all the way up to the exquisite chandeliers.
