Hiking in the Quiraing nature preserve is a guaranteed way to experience panoramic scenes of the surrounding countryside, which include amazing rock formations, deep valleys and glass-like lochs (lakes). When the fog rolls over the hills, the scene becomes almost mythical, as if it's straight out of a fantasy.

This image of the Quiraing winding road was taken from the hiking trail that's next to the parking lots.
To get here, you'll need to drive to this location.
When you arrive, you can either park in the lot called Parking for Quiraing (57.628111, -6.291167) or in The Quiraing Car Park (57.628167, -6.291026).
Once you've parked, walk across to the starting point for the hike (57.628693, -6.289403) and then take the trail up the mountain for about 10 minutes until you reach the GPS coordinates that lead you to this view of the winding road.
Tips
When to go
Best season
June, July, August, September
Best time
Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
Although you can visit The Quiraing during any month, I recommend visiting in the summer to capture the bright green hills (like I have in my photo).
You'll be able to find similar conditions morning, midday and in the late afternoon as long as it's an overcast day with fog.
Field tips
Since the fog is a vital element of the photo, make sure to check the weather before visiting.
The trails can get very slippery if wet, so good hiking shoes and appropriate clothing to suit the conditions is essential.
I wanted to incorporate a model in my shot so that they added a sense of scale. The Quiraing is massive and having a human reference helps to emphasize the size of the hills.
If the day is overcast with low light you might consider taking a tripod so you can slow down your shutter speed without having to worry about handheld shaking.

Do nearby
One of my favorite things to do nearby is to visit the towering cliffs of Kilt Rock and the 55m (180 ft) high Mealt Falls that plunge over the cliffs directly into the sea. Mealt Falls is a short 15-minute drive away, where I also have a location in the app — make sure to check it out!
